Ensure Safe Access: Benton REA Meter Readers Need Your Help

Safety

Clear paths, secure pets, and easy to access meters keep bills accurate and workers safe. It's a win-win.

Benton REA's meter readers want to remind you to keep a clear and safe path to your meter. Unlike some neighboring utilities, Benton REA meter readers still manually read meters each month.

It's important for meter readers to have access to your meter so they can get an accurate reading of how much electricity is used, which in turn, generates your monthly bill—but they also need to remain safe while working. When meters are obstructed by things like weeds, overgrown vines and debris it can create a safety hazard as well as make it difficult to get close enough to see the dials.

Pets can also be tricky. Most of the dogs meter readers meet are friendly and although they can get spooked and bark they are pleasant to deal with. In some cases dogs take their job of protecting their space and humans seriously and can be aggressive toward strangers.

If you have a protective pet that shouldn't be approached, please contact our member experience representatives. They can put a note on your account and help come up with an alternate plan, such as reading your own meter or sending a photo of your meter each month.

We also want to remind you that fences should be placed behind the meter when possible. If you install a fence that would enclose the area where your meter is mounted, it must be accessible by an unlocked gate.

So, help our meter readers out. By taking a few simple steps, such as clearing debris, trimming overgrown vegetation, ensuring your meter is not behind a locked fence and keeping pets secure, you can make their job easier and safer. Together, we can ensure a smooth and safe experience for everyone.
